A few words with Anmari Botha (rising local model who just did Givenchy Couture in Paris)

Anmari Botha is one of my favorite local models to work with - I've worked on a few different projects with her over the past year since she started modeling (including one of her first). Not only is she a gorgeous, statuesque blonde but she always gives 110%. Naturally both these attributes (amongst many) have sent her in Paris, where she's popped up in the recent couture presentations. It is amazing to see her doing so well so soon, and the young Miss Botha was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions about her her trip is going - and tell us what those Givenchy nose rings really felt like to wear.

How is Paris going?Paris is great! I'm really enjoying it. When I first arrived I was terribly scared and homesick because I knew no one here and felt very lonely but each day got better as I made new friends and began exploring the city.
What are some of the most exciting things you have worked on while you've been there?
I haven't been here that long and most of the days I've been running around trying to get to castings. But I suppose the wedding dress I wore from Christophe Josse was pretty exciting. I swear I've never had so many cameras pointed at me. The dress was beautiful and there was a lot of commotion about it. I loved the adrenaline rush just before going on the runway.
Tell us all about Givenchy? Especially those nose rings! (Anmari did the couture presentation)
Givenchy. was. amazing. I did a two day presentation in a hotel where the new collection was displayed. There were 2 girls walking around and the rest of the outfits where hanging in separate rooms. The dress I wore was absolutely spectacular! It is made from crocodile scales (12 crocodiles went into making it!) I felt slightly sadistic wearing a family of crocodiles haha. But the craftsmanship is truly amazing! The nose rings were interesting. they are more comfortable than they look to be honest.. just eating with them was a slight problem.

Is France a culture shock after being in New Zealand (and South Africa this summer)?
France is beautiful but VERY different to my southern hemisphere homes. I find it harder to communicate with the locals (besides the language barrier) they are generally not the friendliest bunch but they've grown on me and you just learn to laugh at them.
Have you bumped into anyone particularly interesting or memorable over there?
Bumped into anyone interesting?? um just casually Cameron Diaz at Givenchy. no biggie :) Also my friend Caitlin Lomax was sent over from NY to do the Chanel show so i was sooo happy to have a familiar face to hang with.
What differences have you noticed about the industry in Paris and the industry here in New Zealand?
Over here its a lot more fast paced. You can't complain or refuse ANYTHING or you won't get anywhere. If you want to get anywhere in the fashion industry you have to be determined and really want it! I pretty face will get you no where. But i suppose its the same in NZ just taken a bit to the next level.

You haven't been modeling that long, I remember working with you on a shoot a year ago when you were just starting out. How have you found this whirlwind first year?
I've only been modeling for about a year and a half now. Just leapt into it really.2012 is going to be amazing. I've been stressed out of my mind already but I've learnt to handle it. I can't really tell what will happen in the next couple of months but I'm off to a good start! so fingers crossed.
What are some moments that stand out the most?
Moments that stand out? I would say meeting new and interesting people while I'm at shows or going to castings. I've made a few good friends and hope to make more.
Are there any more surprising things you have learnt?
Yes. When you ask for a coffee here don't expect to get milk with it. Here coffee you drink black and with a lump of sugar. Also if there is no light at a pedestrian crossing you have to wait until the cars have passed. Pedestrians don't have right of way here.
How long are you in Paris for?And where to next?
I'm not sure how long I will be staying for. perhaps 2 or 3 months, maybe more, i can't say. All depends on how well I do. Milan is a possibility but not 100%. We will see what the future holds when then time comes.

Outfit Documentation: 26th January

Finally doing an outfit post, I've been super lazy recently sorry. I also thought it was a great time to share again the trousers I've been living in lately. They are a pair of the style that I'm now making to order (in a cotton check that is also available) because I've decided that 2012 is all about action and decisions and making your own opportunities. I love them because they are comfortable, the brown toned check goes with everything and they have that sensible, English look to them. Country tweeds and all that. Get yourself a pair here!

Today I wore:

- Humble Trousers in cotton check.

- Sherie Mujs shirt. You can't beat classic blue, and this one is sleeveless - ideal for summer.

- Country Road mens sweater.

- Loafers from some store in Australia that I can't remember. They make me feel like a functional adult.

- Karen Walker Helter Skelter sunglasses.

- MAC Lady Danger lipstick.

What I did:
- Sent fifty million emails this morning.
- Graded my trouser pattern.
- Stressful meeting in town.
- Stressful traffic.
- Stressful HOUR LONG bus ride to get from Ponsonby Rd to High St. Not even joking. Auckland public transport is insane.
- Amazing, as always, dinner at Ebisu. I had the spicy tuna sushi and soft shell crab. Amazing.
- Beers at Golden Dawn with Pebbles and Duncan and co.
- Afterparty at Prego aka chamomile tea, life debriefing and me asking for a blanket even though it is summer.
- Currently at home watching the Melbourne Open.

She had me at Sea Monsters. Underwater motifs are my favorite, and Karen Walker's prints are always a standout of each collection. Naturally I think we can assume the the prints in this collection are going to be pretty great - fish, whales, octopus, giant squid? Maybe even a Loch Ness Monster (granted they are lake dwelling). What do you want to see?

Valentino Menswear Fall 12

This is a total "shit fashion girls say", but I'm really into Valentino at the moment. Usually I'm a diehard Dries/Celine/Raf girl, but over the past season or two I've become more and more enamored with what is going on at the house of Valentino. From the femininity of the womenswear and its carefully considered and beautifully executed flower elements and delicate couture, to the fantastic menswear for fall. I'm particularly impressed with the outerwear - those cape-like coats paired with the suiting.

Jil Sander Pre Fall 12: The best lookbook ever.

The pre fall lookbook from Jil Sander definitely takes out the best concept and execution so far. As I mentioned the other week with The Row, it's good to see more thoughtful, unique concepts when it comes to lookbooks. Jil Sander is evocative of mid centurty collegiate style and genteel, iconic education for women like Sarah Lawrence. Every aspect of it is carefully considered - from the collection to the setting and the hair and beauty, it's all flawless. Naturally the collection fits in seamlessly with this concept whilst managing to avoid being literal. The dresses are all perfectly executed, as are the coats. Both making me want to attempt to be more ladylike.

2012 clearly starts in February
I admittedly spent most of January moping around in a kind of limbo - mostly thanks the average weather, lack of money, post-graduation listlessness and other personal reasons. After a while you realise that, although the help pass the time and keep your mind off things, sleeping until late and taking ridiculously long showers doesn't really do your sanity much good.

You can't just mope around waiting for things to happen, you generally need to hustle.
After a few pseudo-work meetings and some proactive list writing I feel like 2012 is finally getting into the swing of things. It's definitely quite jarring to suddenly not have university to go back to - for as long as I can remember the routine of study has been an unquestionable and dominant part of every year. Now it's time for us to turn that into a career path and see just how marketable a fashion design degree is. Chase work, sell ourselves and be proactive.

In fact, to do something with all that sewing and design practice, I'm now making made to order pants.

There's no better feeling than giving a gift that blows someones mind.
Seriously. Those occasions when you manage to give someone the perfect present and their face lights up and you know you did good. It really is super rewarding.

Stilettos look amazing but boy do your feet hurt the next day.
You all know I'm a little bit obsessed with sassy, grown-up heels at the moment. And boy do they look great. But if you are on your feet in them nearly all night, you certainly feel it the next day. It's mostly worth it, but also a reminder that stilettos are best worn in proportionally more seated occasions like dinner, coffee and meetings. Not dancing to Beyonce.

The mens shows are pretty awesome, but overwhelming.
No way have I been blogging the collections as much as I would like. I have been putting some stuff up on my Tumblr as I see them though, so check it out.

Not only am I a total fangirl of the accomplished Olsen sisters, but am also somewhat addicted to their YouTube doppelganger.
If you haven't discovered Very Mary Kate by now, you are missing out an some serious laughs in life. Elaine Carroll nails a hilarious pastiche of the sisters, Mary Kate in particular, without ever diminishing my genuine admiration for the girls. To start with, watch this, this and this.

Cream cable-knits at The Row and now Margiela, so perfect for winter. Not that winter is anytime soon, but that's fine. As is the more wearable reincarnation of the famous Duvet Coat - I can't think of a better way to deal with cold weather. There's also yet another fur to feel guilty about liking.

The Row Pre Fall 12

As is to be expected, the collection from The Row was one of my favorites of Pre Fall (along with Celine, as usual). The Olsen sisters offering continued in the timeless, ageless simplicity and luxury that they have become so successful for. The knitwear this season is particularly lovely, from simple two-toned roll-necks to cream cable-knits. Other sensible yet irresistible pieces were the likes of a particular grey coat, and the more luxurious than sensible furs. These sat alongside lighter, more transeasonal garments. The silk pieces that featured in black and rust with simple yet elegant details like sheer panels and spaghetti straps. I also love the simplicity of the fitted cotton top in oxford blue, and (what seems to be a) woven wool tshirt. I would wear everything on a near daily basis, which I suppose is the case with every single one of the collections from The Row and one of the best signs of good design - the desire to wear and live in a piece.

The lookbook itself is also lovely - the relaxed portraiture is a refreshing change to some of the more stark, traditional examples. I also love that they used girls like Daiane Conterato, Alana Zimmer and Kel Markey - and kept them so natural looking.

Jil Sander Menswear Fall 12

Raf went back to black with the Jil Sander menswear for Fall. A precise, heavy, dark take on menswear with references to Patrick Bateman, German precision and Rutger Hauer's leathers in Blade Runner. Of course, as it's Raf, there were some idiosyncratic moments of humor with whales and dinosaurs adorning knitwear. And in a humorous nod to the archetypal businessman, most of the models clutched paperbag bags in leather and (presumably) paper - all proudly and ironically bearing the Jil Sander name.

Confession, I've been hibernating a lot lately. Partly because of my annual New Year Blues, partly because of post-graduation limbo and ennui - and the weather is still just erratically average. I really just feel like living in some really classic, indulgent pyjama sets. It makes moping around the house far less tragic than trackpants and a tshirt. If I had my way I'd get some Burberry check pjs, a Margaret Howell pair and, closer to home, some of the sleepwear Karen Walker has done for Every-day Needs.

Check appreciation for Chloe Pre Fall 12

I'm really into traditional prints at the moment. Pinstripes (so naturally Celine Pre Fall made me very happy) and checks in all their shapes on forms from tartan to houndstooth to gingham. Many of which provide the backbone of the Pre Fall collection from Chloe. They add depth and interest whilst remaining traditional and classic, a rare feat. Oh, and our girl Cher always knew how to do a good check.

There are also some interesting shapes going on in the outerwear here, most evident when seen side on.

- Smashed some Renkon for dinner.

I Am Love

I finally got around to watching I Am Love recently, something I have been meaning to do since it showed in the film festival earlier last year. It really is beautiful, the architecture and interiors and the wardrobe is stunning in a very chic, clean Jil Sander way. Naturally Tilda Swinton is also a huge part of what makes this film amazing - her portrayal of an imaculate, genteel wife in Italy is pitch perfect. Screengrabs really don't do this film justice, as they fail to capture the lighting, detail and nuances of the wardrobe. This really is worth seeing.

Celine Pre Fall 12

Perfection, as always, from Celine for Pre Fall. Pictures can do the talking. Except I will say how much I love the pinstripes (been obsessed with them for a while, my mens Comme des Garcons jacket has only slightly satisfied it.) The navy chalk-stripe pieces in the collection are spot on. I also love the way Philo has handled fur in the collection, in practical incarnations like sweater fronts, snoods and some great big bossy fur coats.

I'm not sure weather it's the changing mood in fashion when it comes to footwear at the moment, or the fact that I'm getting older, or that I have finally graduated and now have to face real life. But I'm really into grown up, ladylike shoes at the moment. They tie in with that revival of the nineties aesthetic and also are a refreshing change from all those big heavy wedges that have been around for so long. I'm also of the opinion that sassy, womanly heels like these also seem to demand more of the outfit the accompany - more thought and more integrity. So yeah, this is what I would buy if I had a few thousand pounds burning a hole in my pocket on one of these frequent rainy afternoons.

Outfit Documentation: Sunday 8th January

Haven't outfit posted in a while. Mostly because this average weather and lack of people in town has seen me wearing an approximation of pyjamas most days. Super chic obv. Today I actually went out and did stuff though, hallelujah for me for being a productive and functional adult.

What I wore:

- Comme des Garcons Play tshirt from Fabric (mens size small, because all the womens tshirts came up to my ribcage).

- Tweedy checked trousers I made myself last night. Great cotton fabric purchased from the lovely Petra at Global Fabrics.

- Birkenstock sandals.

- Deadly Ponies bag.

- Country Road shirt tied haphazardly to handbag.

- MAC Lady Danger lipstick.

What I did:
- Set my alarm clock to go for a run, looked outside and thought "F this" and went back to sleep for two more hours. Good decision. All too frequent given the state of the weather for the past two weeks.
- Had coffee, brunch and a long overdue catchup with Glen at Dizengoff in Ponsonby.
- Perused Zambesi and Tatty's.
- Went to The Department Store with my mother and sister. Drank Evian (so dehydrated, life is hard.)
- Checked out MAC and Nike at Britomart. There's heaps of new stock hitting Nike in the next week or two, stay tuned.
- Had drinks and carbs with my dad.
- Now contemplating whether to go for that long delayed run or admit defeat and Le Snooze on the couch. You've got to love all the tough decisions that holidays brings.

I actually like the T by Alexander Wang collection more than the mainline pre-fall collection. Personally, I've always found myself much more drawn to the basics that Wang explores than to the more themey concepts of his mainline collections. So many of the looks from the T pre-fall I would absolutely live in - appealing, wearable and with sex appeal.

Beauty with Calvin Klein

The Calvin Klein Collection shows always consistently feature my favorite beauty looks each season. The spring shows in particular are always clean and almost clinically fresh, with elements of dishevelment. They are also the best inspiration for keeping one's makeup and hair simple and minimal through the summer. All you really need for this is a good, dewy base, a little powder of some sort and some glossy mixing medium - the best of which are all from MAC and can be found in more detail at this recent post.

Spring 08

Clean and natural hair with a boyish side part. Bare face, clean skin with minimal highlights or contouring. Perfect brows.

Spring 09

Clean skin as always - with a lightly bronzed finish. Tawny eyes. Centre-partd hair worn in a charmingly messy, halfhearted attempt at a low bun.

Spring 10

I've devoted a whole post before to the dewy, glossy look of this collection. Dewy skin, wet hair - next level clean.

Spring 11

Matte skin with dewy highlights. Bare eyes with layers and layers of mascara. Clean fluffy hair pulled into low, messy ponytails.

Spring 12

Bouncy, natural hair with just-washed flyaways. Pale, paired back skin.

Whilst I knew I adored the collection, as always, I didn't have the time then to obsess over every detail that I do now that it's holidays.

I'm a strong believer in outerwear having an important place in spring wardrobes (especially given the weather we have had here lately) and it's always a key aspect of Celine collections. The strength in the spring collection lies in the balance between restraint and volume in the outerwear, both of which were structured and crisp. The proportion and balance of the outerwear centres around the high waist through button placement, a high jacket break and wide solid belts. And naturally impeccable finishing.

Pristine ivory and earthy wine hues create two different yet complimentary effects, the latter of course being more wearable. Although if you are in the position to buy Celine outerwear that's probably not much of an issue.

Crisp cottons have been a key element of Philo's collections for the house from the start - many featuring reinforced and structural features that reference men's shirting and the structure of more traditional garments. Here they appear again in tops that are reminiscent of a traditional t-shirt taken to a pristine, clinical level. Offset beautifully in a clean palette with ivory and cream bottoms and the wide, solid belts that are the signature accessory from this collection.

Bottle green is on of the few incarnations of the colour that I like - the perfect example of which is in these two looks. I think green works best when it stands alone or is paired with crisp whites and neutrals.

This is my new favorite necklace. Compact, concise luxury that follows the necklines of the collection. Contemporary, purposeful jewellery that's conveys purpose and freedom in it's simplicity.

True red appeared in the form of these three looks that in function, shape and print evoke preppy collegiate sweaters and nostalgic athletic wear.

Precise, tight necklines executed perfectly in crisp whites and clean, faced finishes. I've always been obsessed with the effect created by high necklines, especially on women - it frames face, allows fabric to hang undisturbed and creates visual balance in a look. Not to mention a sense of elegance and modesty that is refreshing.

These trousers intrigue me and I'd love to see them up close. They seem to utilise two layers of fabric on the front; a white that continues to the back, overlayed in the front leg pieces with a very sheer black. This depth and textural interest works as a perfect foil to the crisp white pieces that exist above each pair of trousers.

I like these offerings from Lim's Pre-Fall collection. It's a sober yet thoughtful step away from the crisply sweet pastels of the spring range. The palette is very good, with warm tobaccos and ochres providing balance to crisp greys and whites. I also like the play on textures - with wools, crisp cotton, sheer silks and even quilting functioning alongside eachother happily and successfully. The relaxed, tawny hair and makeup on Iris van Berne against the grey backdrop finishes everything off nicely, with the latter proving a nice change from the usual stark white lookbook settings.

As much as I love Abbey Lee and Freja, it's a refreshing change to see Joan Smalls and Saskia de Brauw.

It's rare that I find an editorial of the ubiquitous and ever fascinating Kate Moss that I haven't seen. However I stumbled upon this gem in the depths of The Fashion Spot the other day and it's brilliant. By Terry Richardson for Harper's Bazaar in 1998, it's less grunge-waif Kate, more Kate-Went-To-Cannes. Not only is it an ode to the classic American designers like Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Michael Kors and Marc Jacbos, it's also good inspiration for some summer-whites.

Great news for Aucklanders, Playpark by Karen Walker in Newmarket will be (as of this weekend) stocking Phillip Lim. The resort collection will be in store this weekend as will Lim's lingerie range. The latter of which is the perfect gift idea for a young lady in your life - tasteful enough to buy your little sister but also beautiful enough to get your lover. The bras in particular are awesome enough to show off under a slip dress or loose tank, which I'm sure any gift-giving males will enjoy also.

These Rayban opticals were my favorite pair of glasses at the recent Sunglass Hut x OPSM launch.

Good glasses are really hard to find. I have really bad eyesight but find myself repeatedly resorting to contact lenses as I never find opticals that suit me and aren't obscenely expensive. These Raybans are ticking all the boxes - classic, a nice light tone to suit fair skin and a reasonable price (considering you have to add around $200 onto that for lenses). I'm hoping these have a New Zealand release because they are everything I've been looking for in opticals for so so long. Fingers crossed!

There is a new addition on Ponsonby Road, just in time for Christmas and the entertaining/nesting summer season in general. One of my favorite online stores, Everyday-Needs has opened up a pop-up store full of everything the stock online but with the benefit of being able to appreciate the feel, touch and weight of each piece. I need to go back when I have more time and money because clearly I am in need of scarves/ceramics/pillows/glassware. Clearly.

The Christmas List #1 - Recycled glassware from Simon James at TheDepartment Store

Everyone knows Christmas is hard. And stressfull. And expensive. But fun! But also a bit angsty. It's easy to spend far to much money on gifts that are only average. So this Christmas I'm on a mission to find (and share will all my readers) things I find that could make potentially awesome gifts for those people that are tricky to buy for. I'll be looking at gifts with some integrity, style and use - at various pricepoints. I've been slowly compiling a mental Christmas List of things that would be great gifts (or, of course, perfect to by for yourself). One of the standouts so far are these tumblers made from recycled glass that can be found at the Simon James Concept Store on the ground floor at The Department Store. I love glassware - the simpler and more sturdy the better - and naturally these drew my attention. A pleasure to hold and a pleasure to drink out of. They would be a grreat present for someone who appreciates simple, functional gifts with a clean aesthetic. Also a great gift for males in your life - they would look fantastic with scotch on the rocks in them.

Graduate Collection 2011

So we all know I have been awol and manically busy with uni this year, subsequently devoting less of my attention to all sorts of things like my blog, my love life and my cuticles. However I can finally share my graduate collection with you all! The Rookie Show (our graduate show) walked last night and I had been holding off sharing my lookbook until that had happened. The whole production was amazingly slick and successful - I can honestly say I've never been prouder to be apart of something and am so honored to be selected. So many feelings! The feelings and the bubbles and the beers were certainly flowing last night as we all celebrated. Thankyou so much to everyone who came along!

And here we are, my graduate lookbook shot by Guy Coombes. The collection explores comfort and familiarity through garments that have a significance to me. There is also an emphasis on colour and textile and the effect those have on both the wearer and the onlooker. I set out to create garments that made the wearer feel happy and at ease, and I have achieved it. It's a good feeling! After all those long sleepless nights. Enjoy!
