A few words with Jason Chong Li of Stephen Marr

Jason has been my hairdresser for some years now, keeping my the perfect shade of icy blonde. He's also so talented when it comes to editorial and runway hair - having worked for the likes of Black magazine and directing the hair for Zambesi's NZFW shows. You'll find him most days at Stephen Marr's Newmarket salon. He took some time to have a chat about what styles he's into right now and the top notch products to be using.

How long have you been doing hair for?
I'm a late start for the industry. My first apprentice experience was back in 2003. Almost 10 years ago.
What drew you to the hair industry?
I always like playing with hair and I used to care about my own hair so much. Not so much now.
Have you always been at Stephen Marr?
Basically yes. Before that I did work experience at a couple of good salons when I was at academy, before that I was full time apprentice for a little while at a small salon.
What inspires you?
My team and everything.
What styling / colours are you into right now?
With styling right now I love a clean overall feeling with light texture. Or with lots of a texture but in a clean way. Am I confusing myself? Colour-wise, same tone on different level. Especially chestnut, and biscuits brown. And I always like copper.

Who has the best hair?
Grace Coddington
What mistakes do people make with their hair?
Going against what they naturally have. Or trying to be "funky".
What's the hair trend for this winter?
A few things that I mentioned before. To me, a simple colour with same tone on different level. Try wear your hair simple and clean, light texture. Not too over the top with volume. And yeah, ponytail.
What's your current favourite products?
O&M surf bomb. Love the texture! Not too light, not too crunchy, it's just right. O&M styling guru, a suits- all-hair-type blow dry in products. Everything from Snob Girls is amazing. Sans nourishing ultra plus - the best treatment I've ever used, hands down. Wella volume mousse/leave in conditioner.

It's every girls goal in life to go to the Polo right?

Because it's definitely one of mine. I've always preferred the idea of polo to horse-racing. More stylish, and more interesting - it's not called "the sport of Kings" for nothing. If it's one of your goals in life too (and it's so important to have goals right) I can totally make this happen!

I have a double pass to the Fashion Lawn at the BMW NZ Polo Open on Sunday 24th of February. Play commences at 11am. To enter, simply tell me in the comments about your dream polo outfit (mine is probably Rochas or Dries Van Noten).
Include your full name and email. The winner will be drawn on Wednesday 20th.

NYFW: Reed Krakoff Fall 13

The textures and colours at Reed Krakoff were so good - silk satins, dense furs and bonded wool in deep shades of ink, forest green and black. Practical, sober and luxurious. I'm still also really obsessed with turtlenecks in any scale or fabric, that's not going anywhere.

CR Fashion Book #1 "Lullaby"

The second issue of the CR Fashion Book by Carine Roitfeld is out soon (cover shots by the likes of Gus Van Sant and filtering out) but I'm still totally enamoured with the editorial in issue one. Particularly this story. Power mothers. Chic and no nonsense style yet the whole thing is so tongue in cheek. Because obviously what goes better with Hermes, Celine and diamond earrings than a traditional baby carriage?

Alexander Wang, A$AP Rocky & Bon Qui Qui

This is probably the best thing I'll see all week - and it's only wednesday. Featuring some of my favourite Alexander Wang accessories, Bon Qui Qui doing what she does best and a cameo by A$AP Rocky - it's Youtube gold.

Speaking of A$AP Rocky. I've had his new album Long. Live. ASAP on repeat for the past couple of weeks. The whole album is awesome. Obviously tracks like 'Fashion Killa' stand out for all their designer name checks - Jil Sander, Ann Demeulemeester, Lanvin and Damir Doma show his fashion pedigree. Also so good is 'Hell' featuring Santigold. And I can't pretend like I don't like that song with Skrillex.

You should listen to Alec Baldwin interview Lena Dunham because that's what I did last Saturday night

I know everyone goes on and on about girls - regardless of which side of the fence they are on. So try not to fangirl too much, because I really do love it. It always hits uncomfortably close too home - making me both cringe and laugh. Creator and star Lena Dunham is refreshingly self aware (the whole show is, after all, a hyper real parody of herself and her peers) and was recently interviewed by Alec Baldwin (one of my other all time favourite actors) for his radio show.

You should probably listen to it. It's all I did last Saturday night.
